As discussed in Tips to Naturally Induce Labor, few of these tips can be supported with any scientific evidence. However, if you’re ready to meet to your little one, trying one or a combination of them can’t hurt! Just remember: safety first! Listen to your body, and don’t push yourself.
Acupuncture
This alternative health practice has been used for centuries to start the baby process, especially throughout the Asian continent. The tiny needles not only relax a mother’s body, but can target specific areas to potentially trigger labor. Of all of the ways to naturally start the labor process, acupuncture will be the most expensive. It should always be performed by a licensed professional—one that has specific experience working with expecting mothers.
Sex
Yup! You read that right. The body releases prostaglandins during sex, which are akin to the manufactured drugs used to induce labor. Before you delve into those sheets, there are a few things to know. First, it’s important to avoid having sex if your water has broken, as this could lead to infection. Second, your partner needs to ejaculate inside you. Why? Because that’s where the prostaglandins reside. The ejaculate needs to reach the cervix—only then might contractions be triggered. Third, orgasm is a key trigger here—a good orgasm can help dilate the cervix. Not all positions will comfortable in your ninth month, so be aware of what’s right for you. Yea-hah, cowgirl!
Nipple Stimulation
Nipple stimulation may indeed help your body start labor on its own. Rubbing, massaging, or sucking the nipples may help those contractions get started. Why? Good question! The body releases a hormone called oxytocin when the breasts are stimulated. Oxytocin has several functions, but one of them is helping the uterus return to its regular size. Therefore, stimulating the nipples may trigger contractions if enough oxytocin is released in the body.
Tension Relievers
Whether it’s through a licensed masseuse or a real tear-jerker, activities that facilitate relaxation can help your body take the next step in your pregnancy. If you elect to go the massage route, make sure your masseuse is certified for prenatal bodywork and experienced in providing this type of massage. And don’t underestimate the power of a good cry—it might just be the release your body needs to begin labor naturally.
Hip Circles
If you’ve always wanted to learn to belly dance, now’s the time! Large, rhythmic hip circles may nudge the baby into the position, signaling to the cervix that it’s time to go. Advocates of hip circles suggest dancing for blocks of 10-15 minutes and then resting before dancing again. However, the longer you can circle those hips the better!
It’s a good idea to talk with your healthcare professional before you attempt to naturally induce pregnancy labor on your own. Once they’ve okayed your attempt, set aside a day to try as many of these natural induction methods as you can—the more the merrier! Natural labor induction can be a wonderful activity to engage your partner; in fact, it just may be the last great adventure the two of you embark on before welcoming your son or daughter into the world!
